Shake It Out - Manchester Orchestra
‘cause i’m done being done with the funerals at least for now
are you tired of being alone, are you tired of...
The internet is strange. Peter Fletcher has kept a record of his sneezes since July of 2007. The process of recording counts has been a favorite activity of mine for quite some time. Lately I have used various devices and software to count video game achievements (scorehero.com, bungie.net, trueachievements.com) , song counts (last.fm), movie views (gcal), and for a time, food (thedailynoms.tumblr.com). My recent acquisition of a smart phone is sure to accelerate this process (constant access and apps galore).
However there is something particularly appealing about sneeze counting. Peter Fletcher explains on his blog:
When choosing something to count, it is important to realize that some things work better than othersc. Sneezes work, but other candidates for counting are demonstrably less rewarding. For example “saying the word fish”, or “cleaning my teeth” are countable, but can be produced almost at will, and so lack much of the joy of incremental documentation.
Although sneezes are sufficiently unpredictable and involuntary, the act of counting them offers an interesting new take on the old theoretical physics line about events being affected by the process of observation. Sneezecount makes each sneeze matter. It is no longer possible just to blow one out and forget about it
After being made aware of sneezecount, I am overcome with the urge to begin counting more things. Especially things of a similarly involuntary nature. Much of my counting thus far has been limited to accomplishments and collectible experiences. Perhaps it is time to branch out to more behavioral and involuntary actions or sightings. Or maybe I just need to refine my current counting behaviors to include the iPhone.
What do you think I should start counting/documenting?
Absolutely staggering numbers. A real wake up call.
Concerning the “Global Wealth Pyramid” (high res)
We estimate that 3 billion individuals – more than two thirds of the global adult population – have wealth below USD 10,000. A further billion adults (24% of the world population) are placed in the USD 10,000–100,000 range, leaving 358 million adults (8% of the world population) with assets above USD 100,000. Figures for mid-2010 indicate that 24.2 million adults are above the threshold for dollar millionaires. While they make up less than 1% of the global adult population, they own more than a third of global household wealth. More specifically, individuals with wealth above USD 50 million are estimated to number 81,000 worldwide.
Concerning the “Regional Composition of Global Wealth Distribution” (high res)
To be among the wealthiest half of the world, an adult needs only USD 4,000 in assets, once debts have been subtracted. However, each adult requires more than USD 72,000 to belong to the top 10% of global wealth holders and more than USD 588,000 to be a member of the top 1%. The bottom half of the global population together possess less than 2% of global wealth, although wealth is growing fast for some members of this segment. In sharp contrast, the richest 10% own 83% of the world’s wealth, with the top 1% alone accounting for 43% of global assets

One month ago, I started recording everything I eat each day in order to develop a better understanding of what I am putting into my body. The hope is that observation will lead to an improvment in performance (Hawthorne effect). Eventually I want to use this to deliberately attack different areas of my diet like calories, vitamins, fluids, etc. At the bare minimum, it is fun to be able to track any daily activity over the course of time. Personal stat and behavior tracking is a fetish of mine.

This website normalizes your play counts to take into account the average length of a song by each band. That raised Dragonforce’s rank from 45th to 17th and lowered The Offspring from 27th to 47th. It also reports the predicted amount of time that you spent listening to each artists. Currently Metallica leads the pack with almost 15 hours in the last year. This widget will update over time but I will probably repost a 3-month one ever quarter starting June 1st.

Sure, I am about 3.5 months late, but this is awesome. It is a set of statistics that describe media consumption. Basically my favorite thing in life. They list the top 40 but I have linked the number 1, Lady Gaga (pictured).
As of Wednesday night it is no longer possible to play Halo 2 on Xbox Live. Here are some final stats that bring this game into perspective. It really is THE first person shooter multilayer experience on a console.
This often frustrates me. Graphs should give insight into data that can not simply be gained by a casual glance at the data itself.

Sign I am a huge nerd: I sat down and read through this wiki page for fun after a coworker had left it open on my computer. I am a huge nerd.
I’d like to give a shout out to my recent page view from Msida, Malta. I’m going to have to find that on a map. :)
Years ago I started making a comprehensive list of all the movies I have ever seen. One week ago I paid up for a license to DVD cataloging software, DVDpedia. Since then, I have been adding my list of movies to my digital catalog.
The totals are in. I have watched 736 movies that have a total run time of 57.27 days and a net worth of $12,614.68 (if I were to purchase them all).
mrjawright asked: have you ever seen a legitimate use for a ‘box-and-whisker’ plot. Or was this something created by USA Today statisticians for the purpose of obfuscating data?
ilovecharts responds: Outside of math class…no, I have never seen one used for good purpose. Maybe it was a construct of USA Today, just like anthrax and Spencer Pratt.
