$happy pi day! i was going to post this at 1:59 PM today but then i got thinking… 1) why 1:59 PM? sure i am awake then and not at 1:59 AM, but our hours are really base 24 so 1:59 AM is preferable. 2) why didn’t i just queue this up to publish to tumblr at exactly 1:59 AM. oops too late 3) then again, why stop there right? why not 1:59:26? or 1:59:26.53? but that is what is so mesmerizing about pi isn’t it? you can pick any fraction of any unit of time, no matter how small, and you will still be unable to completely express pi in terms of that unit. if only we had adopted a “time curve in polar coordinates” instead of a “time line”. 4) therefore there is no precise pi moment. even “pi day” should be called “pi truncated at the 2nd decimal place and mapped to the US MM/DD date format day”. that’s much less catchy and doesn’t really fit on a t shirt. then again, neither does pi. 5) where is the closest place to my apartment that sells single slices of pie?
